Itinerary
Day 1 Settle into Trondheim’s Nordic calm | Welcome reception
Welcome to Trondheim, where waterways and timbered wharves set a steady rhythm, your welcome eased by a complimentary arrival transfer to our elegant city hideaway.
Those arriving early can discover the city, either walking historic Bakklandet with a local guide or joining a guided bike ride through lesser-known neighbourhoods, pausing at a welcoming café in Ila to meet locals and taste traditional Norwegian fare (both available to prebook on request).
As evening falls, gather for a welcome reception, meeting your Signature Guide and fellow travellers over seasonal Norwegian dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients at the celebrated Restaurant Troll.
Day 2 Trace Norway’s spiritual heart | Enjoy rare access to Nidaros Cathedral
Begin the day exploring Trondheim. From Kristiansten Fortress, look across the city before passing the Royal Residence of Stiftsgården, the Old Town Bridge and the university quarter, tracing the places that have shaped Norway’s former capital.
At Lian, join the final 5mi (8km) of the St Olav Pilgrimage Route, following a path walked by pilgrims for centuries. The trail leads through woodland and quieter city edges, with time to pause at Sverresborg Open-Air Museum. Historic buildings gathered from across the region reveal changing patterns of rural and urban life, and the museum café provides a relaxed stop for lunch.
Continue towards Feginsbrekka, the ‘Hill of Joy’, where pilgrims once caught their first sight of Nidaros Cathedral. Nearby Utsikten now provides a clear outlook across Trondheim and towards the cathedral spire.
Signature Experience: Walk into the city for a privately guided visit to Nidaros Cathedral, including rare access to its cellar and crypt. Among archaeological remains, medieval tombstones and concealed passageways, hear the stories of Saint Olav, Norwegian royalty and the pilgrims drawn to this national shrine.
Finish with time to enjoy Trondheim at your own pace.
Day 3 Travel by water to the coast | Settle into your Signature Stay
Slow down this morning and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before joining a behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic Britannia Hotel with one of its custodians, uncovering the remarkable history, traditions and personal stories that have shaped this grand landmark for more than 150 years.
After, board the express boat and cruise the Trondheimfjord. Sailing past islands such as Hitra and Frøya we arrive in Kristiansund, a working harbour city spread across four islands, before continuing to Sveggvika Guesthouse, your Signature Stay, a thoughtfully restored clipfish factory, now transformed into a characterful guesthouse.
Join the owners for a fascinating introduction to the property's clipfish heritage, brought to life through local stories and a guided tasting of regional craft beers, before a three-course dinner celebrating the flavours of Norway's Atlantic coast.
Day 4 Learn the language of the coast | Cook with tradition, taste cider and dine like a Viking
Signature Experience: Join a hands-on workshop exploring Kristiansund’s stockfish and clipfish traditions, tasting each at different stages of curing. Learn how historic trade shaped local cuisine before preparing layered bacalao in a guided cooking class, then sit down to enjoy the dish with locally brewed beer, grounding culinary practice in place, history, and flavour.
Later, travel the Atlantic Road – a wonder of nature and engineering – crossing bridges to explore one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Arriving in Molde, the City of Roses, we have a short visit, before taking the ferry to Vestnes and driving along a beautiful landscape of mountains and fjords to Valldal.
Discover the heart of Valldal on a relaxed village walk, uncovering the history, traditions and everyday life of the area. Along the way, visit Lingebakken Fruit & Cider, a family-run orchard nestled among the fjordside landscape, where we meet the owners, gain insight into traditional cider production, and enjoy a tasting of handcrafted ciders made from locally grown fruit.
Step back 1,000 years over dinner in a traditional Viking-style longhouse, where captivating local storytellers bring Norway’s Viking heritage to life through tales, traditions and regional cuisine.
Day 5 Discover Norway’s natural wonders | Experience the beauty of the Geirangerfjord by RIB
Cross fjords by ferry and climb the Eagle Road into Geiranger, often cited as Norway’s most beautiful fjord, where sheer cliffs and famous waterfalls frame the narrow waterway below. Walk a short trail above the fjord before lunch at a working farm, then visit the fjord centre to understand the forces that shaped this landscape.
Signature Experience: Board a rigid inflatable boat and travel deep into Geirangerfjord, where steep rock walls edge the waterway and waterfalls trace long lines down the mountainsides. Pass abandoned farms anchored high above the fjord as your guide explains how families once built resilient lives within this demanding landscape.
After arrival in Hellesylt, continue with the bus to Stranda, take the next fjord ferry to Liabygda and arrive back in Valldal for dinner and overnight at the Blåtind Boutique Hotel.
Day 6 Signature Day | Trace Valldal through fjords, forests, or mountain paths
Today is your Signature Day, where you can select an authentic, curated experience to connect deeply with Norwegian culture. You could:
Kayak a sheltered fjord toward Fjørå and UNESCO-listed Tafjorden, crossing to a historic farmstead for lunch (9am-2pm)
E-bike quiet valley roads and hike through pine forest, ending at a high viewpoint above Tafjorden, with a guided visit to Holy Olav Monastery (3pm-6.30pm)
Hike to the summit of Mefjellet, crossing farmland and mountain terrain to wide views over Tafjorden and surrounding valleys, with lunch en route (9am-3pm)
Journey through the UNESCO-listed Norddalsfjord region, visiting waterfalls, summer farms and Herdalssetra, before meeting local producers and travelling by boat to a working fish farm (9am-5pm – maximum group size: 12)
Day 7 Cross Norway’s mountain heart | Ride the Rauma Railway through Romsdalen
Travel the dramatic hairpins of Trollstigen, pausing to appreciate the scale of the mountains before continuing to Åndalsnes.
Signature Experience: Step aboard the Rauma Railway for one of Scandinavia’s most storied rail journeys. Settle into panoramic carriages as the line traces rivers and sheer valley walls through Romsdalen’s dramatic interior, revealing farms, waterfalls and engineering feats before reaching the high plateau at Dombås − an unhurried passage into Norway’s mountainous heart.
Then continue by train across the high plateau of Dovrefjell on the journey back to Trondheim. Gather this evening for a farewell aperitif and three-course dinner, raising a glass to the landscapes, stories, and shared moments of your Norwegian journey.
Day 8 Say a fond farewell to Norway
After breakfast, take a final moment to reflect on the rhythm of fjords, coastlines, and communities encountered along the way. This journey may have come to an end, but Norway’s sense of place lingers long after departure.
